I was at a sales meeting recently where a participant from another company started slamming competitors after 10 minutes of conversation. While I was being introduced for the first time, and the conversation was quite pleasant, I was surprised at how quickly our meeting had turned to a conversation about “us versus them” - and how the competitors in the market were talked about with disrespect. There is a lesson here:
When it comes to competitors you may rant about them. You may get angry about losing a sale. You may even truly hate them. But when it comes to talking about them - always, always respect them. Highly respect them. Never bad-mouth your competitors. Never. It made the participant at the meeting look small.
You may have the better product or service, the better experience, the better price, etc. If this is the case, then demonstrate why your product or service is better. Great competitors are great opportunities for growth. Great competitors push us to be better, more agile, faster - more competitive. Welcome competitors and respect them religiously.
