The Denver Post reports that Lonely Planet Americas employees put Canada on their list of “hot” 2008 destinations on the basis of a recent poll. Canada tied for 5/6th place with India, with the following qualifier: “Great people - not a rotten apple in the place,” swore one Canada fan.
The US came out in first place: “The USA’s vast borders contain unforgettable experiences for all modes of traveller,” reasoned one writer. “And let’s be honest - the dropping dollar makes it harder to go abroad.” Mexico followed with “more World Heritage sites than any other country in the Americas,” said one respondent.
Argentina, in third place, is consistently one of the staffers’ favorite destinations. “Where else can you experience a cosmopolitan, European feel and still have a few bucks to spare?” Japan was 4th: “It’s the perfect juxtaposition of intense urbanity and natural beauty.”
The remaining destinations in the top 10 were China, Australia, Spain and France.
